Exquisite garden design by renowned landscape architect

Langdale Chase is a luxury hotel located on the shores of Windermere. The house was built in 1891 as a private residence commissioned by Edna Howarth, the wife of a wealthy Manchester businessman. In 1937, under new family ownership, Langdale Chase was converted into a hotel, offering guests access to the tranquillity and scenery of the Lake District. The hotel became known for its high-quality service, well-appointed accommodations, and views of Lake Windermere.

Owned by Daniel Thwaites, the hotel recently underwent a sensitive refurbishment to modernise while preserving the character of the original 1890 Grade II listed building. This extended to the gardens, originally laid out in the 1890’s by Thomas Henry Mawson, a landscape gardener of international distinction who was also responsible for the Palace of Peace Gardens in the Hague.

Daniel Thwaites enlisted the expertise of internationally recognised garden designer and lecturer Annie Guilfoyle to collaborate on this remarkable project. The project features exquisite external terraces that offer breathtaking views across the lake. For the terraces, our durable British Purbeck ragstone external paving was selected, complementing and harmonising with the other natural materials used in the design. This choice of natural stone will stand the test of time and improve with age.
